在美国一般都叫rest room或bath room（男女厕均可）或分别叫做 men‘s room 或 ladies‘ room（=powder room），不过在飞机上，则叫 lavatory，在军中又叫 latrine。至于 W.C.（water closet）仍是过去英国人用的，在美国，几乎没有人使用。
W.C.是最早表示厕所的词没错，不过现在除了非英语国家，这个词差不多已经给淘汰掉了。WC是Water Closet的缩写，指的是一两百年前的冲水式厕所，听起来比较简陋；现在的厕所，我们总可以用Toilet来表示，它让人们联想到的是干净、舒适的场所。记住噢，不管是公共场合还是私人家里，Toilet总是英文中使用率最高的表示厕所的词，用这个词什么时候都不会有问题。
