Loneliness is a subjective experience that reflects the discrepancy between one's desired and actual social relationships. Wisdom, on the other hand, is a positive personality trait that involves the ability to use knowledge, experience, insight and empathy to think and act in ways that are pro-social, such as showing compassion, emotional regulation, self-reflection, balance between uncertainty and decisiveness, and social advice. Wisdom is often associated with better health outcomes and subjective happiness.

So what is the relationship between loneliness and wisdom? Are they mutually exclusive or complementary? According to some recent studies, there seems to be an inverse correlation between loneliness and wisdom, meaning that the wiser one is, the less likely one is to feel lonely, and vice versa. This correlation can be partly explained by the neurobiological mechanisms of loneliness and wisdom, as well as by the psychological and behavioral factors.

From a neurobiological perspective, loneliness and wisdom have opposite effects on the brain regions that process social information. For example, one study found that lonely people were more distracted by angry faces and had weaker activity in the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), a brain area that integrates internal and external information. However, wise people had stronger responses to happy faces and enhanced TPJ activity. This suggests that lonely and wise people have different neural responses to social stimuli. Moreover, loneliness-anger response led to more activity in the left parietal cortex (important for attention allocation), while wisdom-happiness response led to more activity in the left insula (involved in empathy and other social features).

On one hand, the wiser one is, the more one enjoys being alone. When lonely, a wise person would spend their leisure time reading, thinking, and introspecting. On the other hand, loneliness means too much stress because one's expected quality of social relationships is not met. Loneliness can lead to anxiety, or even fear of failure, failure of social connection. But wise individuals are good at creating positive feelings, resilience and intimate interactions, so they do not feel lonely.

In conclusion, loneliness and wisdom are inversely related in many aspects.
