Fortress Besieged is a classic of world literature,a masterpiece of parodic fiction that plays with Western literary traditions,philosophy and middle class Chinese society in the Republican era.The title is taken from an old French proverb,"Marriage is like a fortress besieged:those who are outside want to get in,and those who are inside want to get out".Set on the eve of the ferocious Sino-Japanese War,Fortress Besieged recounts the exuberant misadventures of the hapless hero Fang Hung-chien.This masterwork of world literature plays with Western traditions,picaresque humour,tragic-comedy,satire,Eastern philosophy and the mores of middle-class Chinese society to create its own unique feast of delights.

Qian Zhongshu (Ch'ien Chung-shu) 1910-1999
Modern writer and expert on classical Chinese literature. A native of Wuxi, Jiangsu, Qian studied foreign languages at Qinghua University. In 1935, he went to Oxford, and in 1937 went on to study French literature at the University of Paris. In 1941, he published a collection of essays entitled Xie zai renshengbian shang [Written at the edge of life] and in 1946 Ren�shou�gui [People�animals�ghosts], a volume of short-stories. In 1947, he published his acclaimed novel Weicheng [Fortress beseiged]. After 1949, he concentrated mainly on literary research.

Qian Zhongshu (1910-1998), Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, the original name of the first, character Zhelian, later renamed Zhong Shu, word silent, Huai gathered, used to use the pen name Zhongshu Jun, modern Chinese writer, literary researcher, and Rao Zongyi and known as "South Rao North money." [1] in 1929, he was admitted to the Department of Foreign languages of Tsinghua University. In 1932, I met Yang Jiang in front of the Guyue Hall of Tsinghua University. [2] [3] in 1937, he received a Bachelor's degree from Exeter College, Oxford University, for "China in English Literature in the 1718th Century".
