Mr. About-the-Same

Do you know who the most well-known person is in China?

The name of this person is a household word all over the country.

His surname is Cha, and his given name is Buduo, which together mean "About the Same." He hails from every village, every county, and every province in China.

You must have seen him or at least heard about him.

Mr. Cha Buduo's name is always on everyone's lips because he represents the entire Chinese nation.

Mr. Cha Buduo looks much like you and me.

He has a pair of eyes but doesn't see clearly.

He has a pair of ears but doesn't hear well.

He has a nose and a mouth but lacks a keen sense of smell and taste.

His brain is not small, but his memory is weak, and his thinking is sloppy.

He often says, "Whatever we do, it's okay to be just about right. What's the use of being precise and accurate?"

When he was a child, his mother sent him to buy brown sugar, but he came back with white sugar. When his mother scolded him, he shook his head and said, "Isn't brown sugar about the same as white sugar?"

One day in school, the teacher asked him, "Which province borders Hebei to the west?" He answered, "Shaanxi." The teacher corrected, "You're wrong. It's Shanxi, not Shaanxi." He retorted, "Isn't Shaanxi about the same as Shanxi?"

Later, he worked as an assistant at a money shop. He could write and calculate, but he was often imprecise. He frequently mistook the Chinese character "十" (meaning 10) for "千" (meaning 1000), or vice versa.

The shop owner would get angry and scold him, but he would just smile apologetically and say, "The character '千' only has one more short stroke than '十'. Aren't they about the same?"

One day, he needed to catch a train to Shanghai for urgent business. He arrived at the station leisurely, only to find that the train had left two minutes early. He stood staring blankly at the smoke from the departing train, shook his head, and said, "I'll just have to go tomorrow. After all, today and tomorrow are about the same. But the train company is too strict. Is there really a difference between leaving at 8:30 and 8:32?" As he spoke, he slowly walked home, still puzzled why the train wouldn't wait for him for just two minutes.

One day, he suddenly fell ill and asked his family to fetch Dr. Wang from East Street.

The family member rushed off but couldn't find Dr. Wang on East Street and instead brought back Vet Wang from West Street.

Mr. Cha Buduo, lying on his sickbed, realized they had the wrong person. But in his urgent pain and anxiety, he couldn't wait any longer. He thought to himself, "Fortunately, Vet Wang is about the same as Dr. Wang. Let's give him a try."

So, Vet Wang approached the bed and treated Mr. Cha Buduo as if he were a cow. Within an hour, Mr. Cha Buduo passed away.

As he was about to die, Mr. Cha Buduo gasped, "Living or dead, it's about the same. Whatever we do, it's okay to be just about right. Why take things so seriously?" With these last words, he breathed his last.

After his death, everyone praised Mr. Cha Buduo for his ability to see through things and not worry too much.

They said he never took things seriously, never kept track of accounts, and never quibbled over small matters—truly a virtuous man. So, they gave him a posthumous title and called him "Master of Easygoing."

His fame spread far and wide, growing with each passing day. Countless people followed his example, and soon everyone became a Mr. Cha Buduo.

But alas, from then on, China became a nation of lazy people.
