Break the Cauldron and Sink the Boat

At the end of the Qin Dynasty, Zhang Han, the general of the Qin army, attacked the State of Zhao. The Zhao army retreated to Julu (now southwest of Pingxiang, Hebei) and was surrounded by the Qin army. King Huai of Chu then appointed Song Yi as the general and Xiang Yu as the deputy general, leading the army to rescue the State of Zhao.

After Song Yi led his troops to Anyang (now southeast of Cao County, Shandong Province), he remained inactive for 46 consecutive days. Xiang Yu was very dissatisfied with this and urged him to march into a decisive battle to relieve the Zhao army. However, Song Yi hoped to wait until the Qin and Zhao armies had exhausted themselves in battle before attacking. At this time, the army was short of food and supplies, and the soldiers were exhausted, yet Song Yi still indulged in drinking. Seeing this, Xiang Yu could no longer tolerate it. He entered Song Yi's camp, killed him, and claimed that Song Yi had rebelled against Chu. Consequently, the soldiers supported Xiang Yu as their new general.

Subsequently, Xiang Yu led all his troops across the Yellow River to rescue the Zhao army and lift the siege of Julu. After the entire army had crossed the river, Xiang Yu ordered all the ships to be sunk, the cooking pots to be broken, the barracks to be burned, and only three days' worth of dry rations to be carried. This was to demonstrate their determination to fight to the death with no intention of retreat. With this spirit, the soldiers of the Chu army fought with great valor, each man being worth ten of the enemy, and their battle cries shook the heavens and earth. After nine fierce battles, the Chu army finally routed the Qin army. However, the other feudal lords who had come to reinforce were too timid to approach the battlefield. The bravery and fighting prowess of the Chu army greatly enhanced Xiang Yu's prestige. After the victory, when Xiang Yu met with the various feudal lords at the camp gate, none of them dared to look him directly in the eye.

Later, the phrase "all ships sunk, cauldrons broken" evolved into the idiom "break the cauldron and sink the boat," which is used to describe someone who is determined to fight to the death with great resolve.

Cut the Seats and Sit SeparatelyDuring the Han Dynasty, there were two scholars named Guan Ning and Hua Xin (xīn). They shared a close friendship, studying together in the same place and remaining inseparable. One day, while weeding in the yard, they stumbled upon a piece of gold. Guan Ning ignored it and continued hoeing, whereas Hua Xin, tempted, immediately picked it up and set it aside. On another occasion, Guan Ning and Hua Xin were seated on the same mat, reading books. Suddenly, an official in a sedan chair passed by their door. Guan Ning remained absorbed in his reading, but Hua Xin could not resist putting down his book and rushing outside to watch. Observing Hua Xin’s lack of focus and his admiration for the official, combined with his earlier reaction to the gold, Guan Ning decisively cut the shared mat in two, separating their seats. With a stern expression, he declared to Hua Xin, “From this moment onward, you are no longer my friend.”Later, the idiom “cut the seats and sit separately” came to symbolize the act of ending a friendship.

英文:The more the better

Han Xin is the general of Liu Bang, the founder of the Han Dynasty. He made brilliant achievements in capturing territories for Liu Bang and establishing the Han Dynasty. However, in the sixth year of Emperor Gaozu of Han (Liu Bang's reign title), someone reported that Han Xin was planning a rebellion. As Liu Bang had always been wary of Han Xin, he devised a plan to capture him. But due to insufficient evidence, Han Xin was released soon after. Han Xin knew that Liu Bang was jealous of his talents. He was often depressed and made excuses about being ill to avoid attending court, staying at home as a form of passive resistance.

Han Gaozu Liu Bang also understood the situation well and didn't want to lose such a capable general. So, he often chatted with Han Xin to mend their relationship. Once during a casual conversation, Liu Bang asked Han Xin, "How many soldiers and horses can a person like me command?" Han Xin replied, "At most, 100,000." Liu Bang then asked, "And how many can you command?" Han Xin said, "The more, the better for me, of course!" Liu Bang追问 (followed up with a question), "If you can command more the better, how did I manage to capture you?" Han Xin answered, "These are two different matters. Your Majesty may not be able to command a large number of troops, but you excel at using generals. That's why I was captured by you." Since then, the phrase "the more the better" has been widely circulated.

In short, "the more the better" means that more is always preferable. This idiom can also be expanded into an eight-character phrase by adding "Han Xin soldiers" at the beginning, becoming "Han Xin soldiers, the more the better."

Ji An was a renowned minister during Emperor Wu's reign. When he held an official position, numerous visitors called on him daily. Later, he resigned and returned home to rest. In the morning, he swept the courtyard; at noon, when he opened the front door, he would always see many sparrows searching for food and frolicking around. Sighing with emotion, he remarked, "When I was an official, guests thronged my door; now that I am no longer in office, I could set up nets to catch birds here."

Soon after, the emperor issued an edict recalling him to service, and the guests who had frequently visited him before came flocking back once again. Through this cycle of prosperity and decline, Ji An saw through the fickleness of human relationships. The idiom "Men Ke Luo Que" (门可罗雀) literally means "one can set up nets to catch birds at the door," describing a scene of extreme desolation and lack of visitors.

Three orders and five declarations

In the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a famous military strategist named Sun Wu. He took his Sun Zi's Art of War to present it to King He Lu of Wu. After reading it, the king of Wu said, "I've gone through all your thirteen chapters on the art of war. Do you want to test your strategies on my army?" Sun Wu agreed. The king then asked, "Is it okay to use women for the trial?" Sun Wu also agreed.

So, the king of Wu summoned 180 beautiful women from the palace and asked Sun Wu to train them. Sun Wu divided them into two teams, appointing the two concubines favored by the king as the captains. He instructed each of them to hold a halberd. Once the formation was set, Sun Wu ordered the executioner's axes (ancient instruments for capital punishment) to be brought out and repeatedly admonished the women. After that, he beat the drum and issued the order to turn right. To his surprise, not only did the female soldiers fail to follow the order, but they burst into laughter.

Seeing this, Sun Wu explained in detail what he had just said once again and then beat the drum to give the order to turn left. However, the female soldiers still just laughed. Sun Wu then said, "If the explanation is unclear and the instructions are not well - conveyed, it's the general's fault. But if the instructions are clear and they are still not followed, it's the captains' and soldiers' fault." After saying this, he ordered his attendants to push the two captains out and behead them.

When the king of Wu saw that Sun Wu was about to execute his beloved concubines, he hurriedly sent someone to plead with Sun Wu. But Sun Wu said, "Since I've been appointed as a general, when I'm in the army, I can't be bound by the king's orders." So, he ordered the execution of the two female captains and then appointed two new captains from the ranks.

From then on, the female soldiers diligently practiced all kinds of complex maneuvers, whether it was moving forward or backward, turning left or right, or even kneeling and standing up. They no longer dared to treat the training lightly.
