一、建造背景天一阁由明代兵部右侍郎范钦建于嘉靖四十年至四十五年（1561-1566年），原名东明草堂，后更名“天一阁”。名称取自《易经》“天一生水，地六成之”，既寄托了以水克火、防火护书的愿景，也有说法源于其收藏的龙虎山天一池石刻。
二、馆藏与特色现藏古籍30余万卷，其中珍椠善本8万余卷，核心特色突出：
明代地方志与科举录为珍品：271种地方志中164种为海内孤本，379种明代科举录九成以上为孤本；
另有《永乐大典》残卷、乾隆御赐《古今图书集成》等珍本；
藏有丰坊刻神龙本《兰亭序》碑石等镇馆之宝。
三、发展历程原是范氏私家藏书楼，后世恪守“书不出阁”等祖训守护藏书；清代后因战乱等屡经散失，新中国成立后追回流失藏书并新增社会捐赠；1994年与宁波市博物馆合并为天一阁博物馆，现为全国重点文物保护单位、国家5A级旅游景区，兼具藏书保护、文化展览与旅游功能。
