只为了褒姒一笑，周幽王点燃了烽火台，戏弄了诸侯。公元前781年周宣王去世，他儿子即位，就是周幽王。周幽王昏庸无道，到处寻找美女。大夫越叔带劝他多理朝政。周幽王恼羞成怒，革去了越叔带的官职，把他撵出去了。这引起了大臣褒响的不满。褒响来劝周幽王，但被周幽王一怒之下关进监狱。 褒响在监狱里被关了三年。其子将美女褒姒献给周幽王，周幽王才释放褒响。周幽王一见褒姒，喜欢得不得了。褒姒却老皱着眉头，连笑都没有笑过一回。周幽王想尽法子引她发笑，她却怎么也笑不出来。礁石父对周幽王说：“从前为了防备西戎侵犯我们的京城，在翻山一带建造了二十多座烽火台。万一敌人打进来，就一连串地放起烽火来，让邻近的诸侯瞧见，好出兵来救。这时候天下太平，烽火台早没用了。不如把烽火点着，叫诸侯们上个大当。娘娘见了这些兵马一会儿跑过来，一会儿跑过去，就会笑的。您说我这个办法好不好？”
周幽王眯着眼睛，拍手称好。烽火一点起来，半夜里满天全是火光。邻近的诸侯看见了烽火，赶紧带着兵马跑到京城。听说大王在细山，又急忙赶到细山。没想到一个敌人也没看见，也不像打仗的样子，只听见奏乐和唱歌的声音。大家我看你，你看我，都不知道是怎么回事。周幽王叫人去对他们说：“辛苦了，各位，没有敌人，你们回去吧！”诸侯们这才知道上了大王的当，十分愤怒，各自带兵回去了。 褒似瞧见这么多兵马忙来忙去，于是笑了。周幽王很高兴，赏赐了礁石父。 隔了没多久，西戎真的打到京城来了。周幽王赶紧把烽火点了起来。这些诸侯上回上了当，这回又当是在开玩笑，全都不理他。烽火点着，却没有一个救兵来，京城里的兵马本来就不多，只有一个郑伯友出去抵挡了一阵。可是他的人马太少，最后给敌人围住，被乱箭射死了。周幽王和礁石父都被西戎杀了，褒似被掳走。
