Pride and Prejudice Book Report
This is not a profound literary criticism, nor is it a technical guide on "how to improve vocabulary by reading classics." Instead, it is a sharing of experiences from someone who loves reading and is simultaneously honing their English skills, with Chinese as their native language.
Book Information
Chinese Title: 傲慢与偏见
English Title: Pride and Prejudice
Reading Method: Intensive Reading
Degree of Intensive Reading: (3 Stars) Reading word-for-word and sentence-for-sentence with a Chinese-English comparison version; only annotated the Chinese meanings of new words without delving into their English definitions; marked difficult sentences and paragraphs.
Introduction
Although I haven't officially finished reading this book for another 20-plus days, I am eager to share some of my insights and experiences, prompting me to start writing this report. Please forgive me as I am still a novice in English writing. Perhaps after reading 1,000 English original books, I will have the courage to write a book report in English.
My Third Attempt to Read "Pride and Prejudice"
During Middle School: I read the Chinese translation out of respect for the literary status of this work. However, the reading process was far from enjoyable. I skipped through the "key plots," symbolically enhancing my "literary cultivation."
Early in My Career: Feeling that my English level was subpar, I attempted to improve it by reading the original English version. Unfortunately, due to limited time and energy, I only managed to read a few pages before giving up. But the brief reading experience was still enjoyable. Personally, I believe that reading original literary classics requires a foundation of life experience and reading ability. It's hard for me to imagine how prodigies understand such classics at a young age. Did they really understand them?
This Time, at 32: With real experiences and reflections on love, marriage, society, and human nature, I once again picked up this book and was able to stick with it, enjoying the process throughout.
Reading Experience Sharing
The Original English Version is Truly Difficult to Read: For those with less experience reading original English books, I recommend using a Chinese-English comparison version. Of course, many English learners reject Chinese translations, believing they hinder immersion in the English language and the cultivation of English thinking. I believe there are pros and cons to both approaches, as long as one is not deceiving themselves. My reading goal was simply to understand the entire storyline and appreciate the author's emotions and thoughts. Therefore, I did not choose the "suicidal mode" but instead jumped into the sea with a "lifebuoy."
Even with the Help of Chinese Translations, It's Not Easy to Finish Reading: There are often obscure or archaic words, and lengthy, complex sentences. Many places required repeated reading, comparing Chinese and English, searching online for information, or consulting experts to truly understand. I didn't have grand ambitions for this book, so I didn't look up and record the English definitions of words or consult many resources. Perhaps someday, when I want to write a literary criticism of this book in English, I will once again read it intensively with a "5-star" effort.
Another Important Reason for Writing This Book Report: I deeply understand that reading is a skilled and technical activity. It's not about simply picking up a book or following the trend to read a book and expecting to have an enjoyable reading experience. This is similar to singing. Some people think singing is easier than playing musical instruments. Anyone with physically healthy vocal cords can sing. Indeed, anyone physically capable can pick up a book and "read" or open their mouth to "sing." But is the "experience" the same for everyone?
Recommended Translation: I highly recommend the translation by the "Shengshi Education Western Classics Translation Committee." The name suggests that this translation is a collective wisdom, rather than the work of a single individual. The translation skills are truly impressive, especially in the letters, which are styled in classical Chinese. This requires both solid English and Chinese proficiency.
Photos Attached
To briefly demonstrate the language difficulty of the book, the translation skills, and my so-called "3-star" intensive reading level, I have attached some photos. Of course, for some experts, this may only be considered a "1-star" effort. However, my reading goals are clear, and I am not deceiving myself, which is enough.
Reading is a highly personalized experience. Enjoyment is key. I hope more people will join our group and share their reading experiences. A "bad start" is better than never taking the first step.

"Pride and Prejudice" is one of Jane Austen's most famous novels. Its old name is” first impression”,The story show the the British society's life in that time by describing the marriage problem. It is mainly describe the love story of Bennet ’s several daughters Mr.Bingley is newly from London and fall in love with the big daughter ,Jan ,who is gentel and beautiful ,his friend Darcy is sweet upon the second daughter Elizabeth. For some reasons prejudiced Elizabeth against Darcy ,their marriage moves slowly .After a range of interesting troubles, the misunderstanding is finally removed .With Darcy overcomes his pride ,and Elizabeth her prejudice ,they get together with each other finally .Through the describing of different marriage ,Austin expresses her opinions of the marriage which is insist on the understanding to each other .To a certain extent ,this novel is also reflectes the wish and ideal on the marriage independently for women in that time.
傲慢与偏见英文读书笔记概括((二):
Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters.
The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. (Actually she is a pedant.) Kitty doesn't have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.
傲慢与偏见英文读书笔记概括(三):
The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen's favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book.
The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”。

The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”. The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.
People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.
I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century.
In “Pride and Prejudice”, the sister of Mr. Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.
In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?
One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish"
